
A Journey to the Base of the World’s Fifth Highest Mountain (8,485 m)
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and rewarding trekking adventures. Traversing the pristine Makalu Barun National Park, the trail passes through lush subtropical forests, traditional Rai and Sherpa villages, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and spectacular Himalayan landscapes. Unlike Nepal’s busier trekking routes, Makalu offers true wilderness, incredible biodiversity, and breathtaking views of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang, and Baruntse.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m)
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be welcomed by your trekking representative and transferred to your hotel.
Depending on your arrival time, you may relax after your flight or explore the lively streets of Thamel, Kathmandu’s popular tourist district. In the evening, your guide will conduct a trek briefing, discussing the route, weather, safety, and equipment.

Day 2: Trek Preparation in Kathmandu
Today is reserved for final preparations before departing for eastern Nepal.
Visit trekking shops if any last-minute gear is required, exchange currency, or explore Kathmandu’s cultural attractions including Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, or Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Day 3: Kathmandu → Tumlingtar → Seduwa (1,530 m)
Flight: 45–50 minutes
Drive: 4–5 hours
An early morning flight takes you to Tumlingtar, a small town in eastern Nepal.
From here, begin a scenic drive through terraced hillsides, villages, cardamom plantations, and winding mountain roads to Seduwa, the gateway to Makalu Barun National Park.
After completing park entry formalities, settle into your lodge.

Day 4: Seduwa → Tashigaon (2,165 m)
Walking Time: 4–5 hours
Today’s trail winds through terraced farms, forests, and traditional Rai villages.
Cross several suspension bridges before climbing steadily toward Tashigaon, the last permanent village before entering the higher alpine wilderness.
The village offers magnificent views of the surrounding hills and snow-capped peaks.

Day 5: Tashigaon → Khongma Danda (3,562 m)
Walking Time: 6–7 hours
This is one of the steepest climbing days of the trek.
The trail ascends continuously through dense rhododendron and oak forests before emerging onto alpine ridges with panoramic mountain views.
Upon reaching Khongma Danda, you’ll notice the cooler temperatures and thinner air.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day at Khongma Danda
Proper acclimatization is essential before crossing higher passes.
Take a short hike to nearby ridges above Khongma Danda before returning to the lodge for the night. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the high alpine section of the trek.

Day 7: Khongma Danda → Dobato (3,860 m)
Walking Time: 6–7 hours
Today’s route crosses several high mountain passes, including Shipton La, before descending into the remote alpine basin of Dobato.
The landscape changes dramatically from forests to rocky alpine terrain with spectacular views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, and distant Everest on clear days.

Day 8: Dobato → Yangle Kharka (3,634 m)

Descend into the beautiful Barun Valley, following glacial rivers and passing waterfalls and alpine meadows.
The valley is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, making it one of Nepal’s most ecologically rich regions.
Yangle Kharka sits beside the Barun River, surrounded by towering mountains.

Day 9: Yangle Kharka → Langmale Kharka (4,452 m)
Walking Time: 5–6 hours
As you gain elevation, vegetation becomes sparse and the valley opens into a dramatic high-altitude landscape.
Snow-covered peaks dominate the skyline while yaks graze peacefully in the alpine pastures.
Langmale Kharka provides magnificent views of Makalu and neighboring summits.

Day 10: Langmale Kharka → Makalu Base Camp (4,860 m)

Today’s relatively short trek leads to Makalu Base Camp.
The trail traverses rocky glacial terrain before arriving beneath the towering southwest face of Makalu.
Spend the afternoon exploring the surroundings and enjoying unforgettable views of Makalu, Baruntse, Everest, Lhotse, and the surrounding Himalayan giants.

Day 11: Hike to Lower Viewpoint (5,300 m)
Walking Time: 4–6 hours
An early morning hike takes you above base camp to the spectacular Lower Viewpoint at approximately 5,300 meters.
This viewpoint offers arguably the finest panoramic views of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Baruntse, Chamlang, Peak 6, Peak 7, and the vast Barun Glacier.
Return to Makalu Base Camp for another night.

Day 12: Makalu Base Camp → Yangle Kharka (3,634 m)

Retrace your route through Langmale Kharka and descend back into the lush Barun Valley.
With decreasing altitude, breathing becomes noticeably easier, making for a comfortable day’s walk.

Day 13: Yangle Kharka → Dobato (3,860 m)

Follow the Barun River upstream before climbing once again toward Dobato.

Day 14: Dobato → Dhara (2,867 m)
Walking Time: 7–8 hours
Cross the high passes before descending through rhododendron forests to the peaceful settlement of Dhara.
The warmer temperatures and richer vegetation signal your return to lower elevations.

Day 15: Dhara → Seduwa (1,530 m)

Continue descending through forests, terraced farmland, and villages before arriving back at Seduwa.

Day 16: Seduwa → Tumlingtar → Kathmandu
Drive: 4–5 hours
Flight: 45–50 minutes
After breakfast, drive back to Tumlingtar Airport for your flight to Kathmandu.
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax, enjoy a farewell dinner, or explore the city before your onward journey.
